Unfortunately, due to the resurgence of COVID in Central Texas and social distancing regulations that are in place, the City has decided not to have a formal Grand Opening of Wetzel Park and the splash pad. We will plan a Grand Opening party later once we are able to have it without the worries of the social distancing guidelines that have been implemented.

In case you missed it, at the last City Council Meeting on June 22nd, the City Council discussed safety concerns related to the Splash Pad with City staff. Concerns related to bonding of the Splash Pad, and City Council wanted to explore solutions before opening the park. Prior to that meeting, City staff coordinated with multiple 3rd-party contractors to verify the bonding and grounding work was done to building standards and everything was approved for operation. At the Council meeting there was an in-depth discussion about the safety concerns for the park, and following the meeting we added additional safety measures approved by the City’s Building Inspector to ensure the park meets all required guidelines before opening. In addition to the City’s Building Inspector, we also called in a commercial inspector that the city has used for years to inspect the park, and he agreed that everything meets building code requirements and signed off on the final inspection. Last week, the City has finally received the Certificate of Occupancy for us to open Wetzel Park downtown!

One final safety piece that we are doing before we open the Splash Pad is adding additional fencing to help keep our children and citizens safer while at the park. The fence should be finished in about a week. Safety for our citizens and peace of mind is the highest priority for the Mayor and City Council. Thank you all for your patience as we work to ensure this park will be completed and safety concerns are addressed prior to the city opening the park. Stay tuned to the City’s Facebook page for future updates!
